A few posts ago I mentioned the challenges of having a shared web hosting service vs. Virtual Private Server. They both actually have their benefits and challenges depending on your needs or requirements. I am at the point now where I am considering a dedicated server account for hosting my websites because I am starting to experience more frequent service disruptions with my shared service account. These problems range from network connectivity, database connectivity/performance and even some minor filesystem issues.
It does cost more for a VPS or dedicated server but they also minimize many of the performance issues that I listed. The ultimate challenge I face now is whether I want to migrate slowly by going with a VPS, but still have potential impact or limitations for my websites. I prefer not to end up in a “you get what you pay for” situation, but I’m also not trying to pay crazy money for webhosting. If I go with a dedicated server then I may have more versatility and expansion for my websites, such as installing a virtual machine for using a specific application that requires a dedicated server for use.
As I rant about this topic I may be leaning towards starting small with a VPS and migrate one of my sites. I will observe performance with that site to see if it’s worth migrating the rest or whether it may be more efficient to get a dedicated server.
