Web Administration: Dedicated VPS or Shared Hosting?

Before I start this topic, I want to make note that this post was proudly created using the wordpress app on my cool Android.. now that’s out of the way :)

Many of us who have our own domains may choose to use web hosts that offer great low rates from $4/month and up. That’s very enticing and for the average web dev hobbyist that’s more than acceptable. There are many of these low rate services out there and for the most part have fairly acceptable uptime. Just ‘google-it’..”best web hosting rates”.

Those hosting services are low because they are using shared resources. In other words one server may host dozens of other peoples websites and databases. This in turn means that you are most likely sharing network and storage resources as well. So on good day you may experience a little “clocking” of your browser as you attempt to load your database driven website due to the shared load used by other peoples websites using that same database host. If that server takes a hit due to someones bad web security and coding, then your site will also be impacted. While the web hosting rates may be low that you are considering to purchase, just also consider how important it may be for your website to load fast and how stable your uptime needs to be.

An alternate solution would be to purchase a dedicated virtual server plan (vps). That means you will have your very own private server that hosts only your website content. In addition, you get command line access and pretty much build the software you need. This is definitely not cheaper, but if you want that little added stability then a VPS plan is what you may want.

Neither of these web hosting options are without flaw as the network stability is only as good as your web host is. Whether you want to save a few bucks and choose a shared hosting service or spend a few bucks and purchase a dedicated VPS, either option offers you a chance to be creative, build and claim your very own spot on the web.
