Today I went on a mini shopping trip and got a few minor supplies for mounting the dvd drive in the front lower storage bin of my console. I picked up the following:
- Silicon Adhesive- for attaching the stryofoam shelving
- Grommets
- Black matte spray paint
I also picked up a few things for the next phase of my project which will involve mainly some clean up of my console.
- Fiberglass wall strips with adhesive
- Epoxy
- 60 grit sanding sponge
So here are the details on what happened during my DVD drive mount process. I’ m a fan of using whatever products or supplies I have sitting around if I believe they will get the job done. I decided to use the the two styrofoam blocks that came in the packaging for the dvd drive as the shelving for the drive. The drive will be mounted on top of the styrofoam.
I cut a hole in the back of the bin for the USB cables and attached a rubber grommet to the hole. The problem I encountered was that the original hole was in the center of the bin which prevented the cabling from having sufficient clearance. The USB connections on the DVD drive are on the left corner, not in the center. So I had to cut a second hole in the the back of the bin more towards the corner rather than in the center. This time the hole lined right up to the connections in the back of the drive. However this presented one more problem. While the hole does line up perfectly, the USB power cable connection is thick and still prevents the drive from sitting all the way back. The drive sticks out of the front of the bin which prevents the storage bin door from closing.
At this point is where I decided to stop for the day. I have decided how I will resolve this problem. I will cut the hole larger in diameter so that it is 1″ rather than 5/8″.? This will allow the cables to sit outside of the bin yet still be attached to the drive. It will also allow the drive to sit all the way to the back of the bin so that the storage bin door can close.
Here are the pics.
